Wish Us Luck!
For the last several years, we have enjoyed going Quail hunting in Southwestern New Mexico, on property owned by one of our hunting group members. Past years have proven to be fairly productive, with exception of last year which only netted a couple of birds.
This year we are thinking about changing strategy and going to a hunting plantation/sporting club in Florida. This type of gentlemen’s hunting is contrary to anything we’ve done before; so, we do it with some reservations.
Unlike most of our group, with me, the social camaraderie is important; but, my primary motivation is the hunt. As I understand it, you can make it as simple as you want. Paid packages provide for everything except hunting apparel. However, I can’t imagine going without my own Browning 12ga. Shotgun (don‘t think she would allow it)!
A Truly Great Hunter?
Have you ever been driving down the road, while hunting that trophy buck, and out of the corner of your eye saw movement? You jumped out of the truck, as the startled buck started to walk away – took aim, fired, and missed. The buck started to bound; you ran after it looking for a vantage point. The deer stopped, as it moved into a thicket; but, you had a shot! You took aim, fired, and it went “click”. You had no ammo! And, the truck was 100 yards away. As you turned towards the truck, you noticed the deer walking slowly over the distant hilltop.
I would not wish this scenario on anyone. However, and I don’t remember who, but a smarter person than I once said, “the mark of a truly great hunter is one who is always prepared, regardless of the situation or circumstances”
Having replacement ammunition with you at all times is super critical, and the solution is not carrying a few rounds in your pant’s pocket. There are multi-purpose hunting vests that not only provide warmth but ample storage for loose or contained replacement ammunition. A lack of good sense should not be responsible for keeping that trophy mount off of your den wall.
Nut’n Comes Easy!
You can smell it in the air; Fall is here, and with it comes numerous hunting opportunities. It’s time to check your hunting gear: have the ATV’s serviced, clean the guns/rifles, and conduct an ammo inventory. You should make a trip to the range for sight confirmation. So many hunters negate or forget this, and then wonder why they missed that trophy shot!
Shooting is a learned skill and requires Practice, Practice Practice! Hunting gear maintenance and hunt preparation is your insurance policy to have a safe, enjoyable, and productive hunt, “Nothing Comes Easy”!
Being Seen Less Not More!
This last fall was my first exposure to turkey hunting. Even though my hunting group gave me a token turkey, the experience was less than satisfying. However, the group told me that most newbies don’t do well the first year, it normally takes a season just to figure-out what to wear.
Camouflage is almost a must to avoid being seen. Wild turkeys seem to have such a keen eyesight. My group was decked-out from head-to-foot in camouflage, including face-mask and gloves. A mistake that I made was not to wear dark colored socks; the orange in my pro-socks stood out like a sore thumb when sitting down.
Hunting apparel is important but regardless of how well you’re camouflaged, you are still an unnatural object in a natural wood’s setting and thus not totally invisible. Your movement is so extremely important and should be kept to a minimum. Turkeys can and will detect the slightest hunter miscue. But, I’ll be ready for-em next year!
Proper Clothes Make a Difference!

Proper Clothes Do Make a Difference
Regardless of the outing, proper clothing does make a difference. The right clothes will keep you warm, dry, and safe. in the worst of weather. As you know, not selecting clothing carefully could ruin your day; worse, the entire trip. The products available today are unbelievable; they even have duds that will keep you cool and yet hold-in the heat at the same time.
Now, the question arises, “How do you choose the correct clothing?” This should not be an intimidating drill; but rather, a deliberate task based solely on the clothing’s intended purpose, type of activity involved in, and personal choices.
Having clothing designed from these new materials will give you more variety, comfort, and practicality. The hunting apparel today, has more meaning than in previous years because of these technological advancements.
